Things Do Happen For A Reason

We all have our bad days, and for me, it just seems like the bad days outnumber the good days.  I realized that every day is a new day.  (Obviously, but hear me out.)  Every day is a new day to discover something new, and potentially life changing.  I found something that I hope will help me improve my life, or at least give me a new perspective on it. I’ll definitely share it later, but I’m pretty excited about it.  It’s another 30 Day program, but it’s more about gaining confidence and loving my life.  So I guess that this is more of a mental program than it is a physical one.  At the age of 27, I truly believe that I am going through a quarterlife crisis and I admit it.  The idea of the big picture in my life is to be determined, and I want to see it, and embrace it.  I don’t want to waste anymore time just plugging away, being unhappy with myself.  So I think the fact that I found this program shows that the time is now for me to do something better.  Do you believe in fate?  I believe that things happen for a reason, so I am embracing this and will share my journey along the way.

Workin On My Fitness has evolved into a fitness blog, as well as my personal journey to living a healthier, happy life.  It’s not all about exercising and eating healthy, but also to be happy with what I am doing with my life – finding my purpose and what I’m meant to do.  So you’ll definitely see more of this on the blog.

Getting Into A Fitness Routine

I’ve been doing this 30 Day Slimdown program for a while now, and it has really gotten me back into working out again, and more importantly, a fitness routine. Before I got back into working out again, I was thinking about a way to get back into it and how. I realized the best way was to get into a workout program, such as the 30 Day Slimdown. If I were to just say, ‘I’m gonna get back into working out again,” and just do a Jillian Michaels DVD, with no real plan, it wouldn’t be as motivating to me. I have done this in the past, and it proved correctly. I wasn’t motivated, and just stopped after the 2nd time I did the workout.

So, 11 days into the program, I really feel that I am sticking to it quite well. I had to do some tweaks, like swap rest days due to unforeseen situations, but that’s ok! I feel that as long as I am sticking to the workout plan, I’m making progress. Something is better than nothing, right?

I also thought about the fact that since the program is a 30 Day program, what will happen after the 30 days? I definitely don’t just want to stop working out after that, and these types of programs kind of set some kind of expectation that once the program is done, it’s done. I look at it as, getting used to a workout routine. I read somewhere that it takes about 28 days to get used to a routine, so I hope that holds true for this!

Finding This Thing Called Happiness

Something that I’ve been struggling with a lot lately and probably for as long as I can remember is being at a point in my life where I could say that I am truly happy with everything. Don’t get this confused though. I’m not saying that my life is miserable in every aspect because it’s not. I am really trying to look for my purpose in life – something that excites me from the time I wake up until the time I absolutely have to sleep. I realize that I am possibly going through what they call a “quarterlife crisis.” And even thinking that maybe I need some kind of professional help, after reading this post, I am slowly rethinking it.

There are times when I hear about people go through big changes in their lives, like – they’re having a baby! or, she’s working at this really cool job now, or he got a really nice raise at work, or they bought a house! and something in me feels jealous over them or that person. I don’t resent them or hate them, but I guess I just feel like, when is something like that ever going to happen to me? I realize that anything in this life is either by luck or by hard work. But I do work hard. And I do everything I am supposed to do. Why can’t I feel that sense of, ‘I can say that I am really happy with my life right now.’ ? You might think this is me being a spoiled brat, but I think that I am probably not alone in this.

I just need some clarity in my life. And yes, I am going back to saying that I just need to put together my ultimate life goals out there. I do get scared. I get scared that I might not achieve them. I guess that is normal to feel that way though. But I know if I never try, then I will never know. But at the same time, I need to be responsible too. So it’s easier said than done.  And I know that the only way to find this happiness is from within, and I am the only one that can make it happen.  We are all unique and have something to offer in this world – I just need to find out what that is for me.

I just had to put it out there. I hope that I can one day get the courage to share my goals with everyone, once I actually figure that out.

Do You Have a Determined Attitude?

Besides wanting to live healthy and fit, I also am a technology geek. The idea of tweaking my blog relaxes me, and I treat my electronics like they’re my children. I love Apple products and I’ve owned every single generation of the iPhone. For some reason though, I did not get my hands on the new iPhone 4, yet. I was just super busy with work, and I figured, after 4 years Apple probably got their act together and it won’t be as inefficient to get a phone. W-R-O-N-G! I was determined to get one (on launch day, without a reservation – yeah. I’m crazy), and stalked the Macrumors forum while I worked. (It’s called multitasking, people!) I even drove an hour to the mall by my husband’s work only to find an unhelpful Apple employee tell me (in a jerky way) that there was no way I was getting a phone without a reservation.

Well, it pissed me off that he was so rude, but eventually I got over it. I’m a big believer in karma, and what goes around, comes right back around. I’ll eventually get my iPhone 4 and play around with it until they release the next one. It’s crazy how people can get towards physical things sometimes, right? I mean, it’s JUST a phone. But, this post is about determination.

This week, my husband and I did Jillian’s Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism workout. It’s twice as long as the 30 Day Shred and it was definitely difficult. You’d think it wouldn’t be too bad since there are no weights involved. You use your own body weight, which to me is more difficult. He wanted to stop halfway through, and I was even thinking about throwing the towel on the workout. But, I told myself, no! I gotta finish this. I need to. I was determined to finish. And guess what? So did my husband.

Why did I even mention the iPhone story on a fitness blog? Well, it’s because I have a determined attitude. I’ve always been like this for as long as I can remember. When I want something, I’m determined to find ways to get it. Even though I wasn’t successful with getting the new iPhone, I still tried. So even though you try something and don’t get it at first, that doesn’t mean you should just quit and close the door on it. Same goes with exercise. If you started the routine, just finish it. Think about the fact that you will get to that end point and go on with the day thinking you accomplished something. Determination works whether you tried (and will continue to try) and the accomplishment of getting “there.”

If you have any stories on determination, DO tell! :)

The Importance of Defining Goals – A Vlog

I decided to do a video blog post, and I think doing this more will help me in opening up more as a person, as well as express how I feel past the words on the blog.

How to Burn More Fat Everyday. Tips for Tapping into Those Fat Stores!

Recently I appeared on Mornings With Kerri-Anne to discuss how we can burn more fat during our workouts and through our diet. Watch the 3:24min clip below.

My Top 5 Tips for Burning More Fat:

  • Train before Breakfast, on an empty stomach: Studies show you burn more fat training on an empty stomach and your metabolism stays boosted for up to 15 hours after you train. That covers you over breakfast, lunch and even dinner!
  • Interval training: Building up the intensity of a cardiovascular activity to close to a 10/10, then giving yourself a recovery. For example my treadmill interval training program
  • Running is the BEST fat burner around: Try to teach yourself how to run. The Couch to 5k is a great ‘learn to run’ program, building you up steadily over 9 weeks.
  • Build lean muscle mass: The more lean muscle you have on your body, the faster your metabolism. Try to incorporate weight training into your program at least two days per week.
  • No carbs at night: I am a carboholic and love them! They are not your enemy, however if you are wanting to maximise your fat burning then steer clear of them at night. They get converted to blood sugar very quickly, triggering the production of fat storing hormones such as insulin. Remember, no bread before bed, no white at night!
